What Is Sexual Harassment?
Sexual harassment is a broad legal category referring to unwanted sexual attention. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) breaks harassment incidents into two primary categories:
- Quid pro quo: Quid pro quo is a Latin phrase meaning “something for something.” Quid pro quo sexual harassment refers to expressed or implied requests for sexual favors, typically by a supervisor at work. In return, the harasser may offer some type of benefit such as a promotion. The harasser may also threaten punishment, including termination, if the sexual favor is not provided.
- Hostile environments: This applies to situations where an individual’s speech or conduct creates an unsafe atmosphere. A broad range of actions create a hostile environment, including crude jokes, requests for dates, inappropriate touching or disparaging comments about your sex.
Harassment can take place in any number of locales — not just the workplace. If you are enduring such behavior, reach out to us for help.
What Is Sexual Assault?
Sexual assault typically refers to incidents involving sexual contact without consent. This conduct may originate through force, intimidation or abusing authority. Common acts of sexual assault may include groping, molestation and rape.
Such behaviors must be addressed swiftly and with the utmost seriousness. If you or someone you know has suffered an assault, it is crucial to contact law enforcement and engage qualified legal help.
