It can take considerable time to deal with a claim of sexual harassment or sexual assault. As a victim, you may still feel vulnerable knowing your abuser is out there.
One option you may wish to consider is seeking a restraining order. It can prevent the situation from becoming worse before it gets better.
Once you accuse a person of harassing or assaulting you, they might increase their aggression. They may do so to try and persuade you to drop the charges. Or it may be they think they will get away with it. You cannot second guess someone’s intentions, so it is best to err on the side of caution and keep them away from you.
There are several types of a protection order
Courts often issue protection orders in cases of domestic violence. Yet, you can request them against strangers too. You have two choices:
- Emergency protection order: As the name suggests, this is for an emergency. You may not feel safe waiting until the courts open, so this can act as a stop-gap.
- Temporary protection order: A court can issue this at your request after you speak with a judge. A court will set a time limit on the order, after which you would need to seek a renewal if you still feel threatened.
A protection order can deter a person from continuing their harassment against you. They will face increased penalties if they breach it. Sexual harassment or sexual assault can have a devastating effect on your life. Once you accuse someone, it is hard to know how they will react. Placing a protection order can add security for you, your friends or family and even your pets.
